Charleston has a building type named for it: the Charleston sideyard house. It is an urban type because the setback is usually zero. Here is an example with a delightful double entrance. The door opens onto the porch, as you can see by peeking over the green gate. This presents a formal principal entrance to the street as well as privacy for street-level porch sitters, who did not consider it polite to appear in public (open porch) without a jacket. It does reduce "eyes on the street" from the porch, however.
