These covered stoops are a common private frontage type in Providence. This block is especially interesting because it appears that the sidewalk was extended into the private frontage rather than the stoops and bay windows encroaching into the public frontage. Without looking at a plat map we cannot tell for sure, though the pre-litigation age of the houses would argue for the lot line being at the facade, not at the lower edge of the stoop. In new development, an extension of the sidewalk may be done as a Coordinated Frontage (Smartcode term found under Special Requirements) to shift potential legal liability for stoops, sidewalk signs, planters, etc., onto the private property owner rather than the city.
